Dutch soccer sensation Quincy Promes, who was recently convicted in absentia by an Amsterdam court for his involvement in cocaine smuggling, has been apprehended by authorities in Dubai. The arrest follows a request from Dutch prosecutors who are now seeking his extradition to the Netherlands.
Although prosecutors did not officially confirm Promes’ identity, they stated that a 32-year-old man residing in Moscow, believed to be Promes, was detained in Dubai. Promes currently plays for Spartak Moscow and resides in the Russian capital.
The Amsterdam Public Prosecution office revealed that the arrest was made based on a Red Notice issued by the Netherlands, marking a global request for the provisional arrest of an individual pending legal actions such as extradition.
Reports suggest that Promes was residing luxuriously in Dubai, but authorities managed to take him into custody with collaboration between both countries. The prosecution emphasized the ongoing investigation, refraining from providing further details at this time.
Promes, who had an illustrious career with 50 international matches for the Netherlands, scoring seven goals, saw his career marred by legal troubles. In addition to the recent cocaine smuggling conviction, he was previously found guilty of stabbing his cousin and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Despite being a former player for clubs like Ajax and Sevilla, Promes, who denies the allegations against him, did not appear at his trial in Amsterdam, leading to his conviction in absentia.
