98-year-old patient survives emergency vascular surgery at Abu Dhabi hospital

A nonagenarian in critical condition received life-saving vascular surgery at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) in Abu Dhabi, with the hospital’s surgical team successfully restoring blood flow to her lower limbs and averting potential amputation.

The 98-year-old was brought in presenting with severe lower limb ischaemia — a condition in which dangerously reduced blood supply puts tissue at risk of irreversible damage. Her age and the acuity of her condition made the case among the most demanding scenarios a vascular team can face.

Remote expert guidance was part of what made the intervention possible. Dr. Hazzaa Osman, a vascular surgery specialist at SKMC, provided real-time clinical direction from off-site throughout the emergency. “Patient care is at the heart of everything we do,” he said. “Our priority is to deliver the highest standards of treatment, regardless of time, circumstance, or case complexity.”

Dr. Ottorino Del Foco, who heads the hospital’s vascular surgery department, pointed to the coordinated nature of the team’s response as central to the outcome. “This case exemplifies the strength of our multidisciplinary approach and the dedication of every member of our vascular surgery team,” he said. “Managing complex emergencies requires not only technical expertise, but also seamless communication and collaboration. I am immensely proud of the professionalism and commitment demonstrated throughout this intervention.”

The patient has since shown encouraging signs of recovery. SKMC operates under SEHA, a subsidiary of PureHealth, which describes itself as the largest healthcare group in the Middle East.
