Sixteen two-woman teams took to the court in Doha for a one-day pickleball competition aimed squarely at newcomers to the sport, organized by the community group Papawis QLAB under its Ladies Night banner.
Entrants were placed in a combined Beginners and Novice bracket, a format the organizers said was designed to keep the barrier to entry low. According to Papawis QLAB, the 32 competitors came from a range of nationalities, with Filipino residents forming the core of the turnout alongside players from other communities in Qatar.
The group framed the event as an on-ramp rather than a purely competitive fixture. Its stated goals included getting more women comfortable playing sport in a public setting, building fitness habits, and widening local exposure to pickleball, a paddle game that has expanded quickly across the Gulf in recent years.
Papawis QLAB describes itself as an organization built on the premise that recreational sport can draw people together and encourage healthier routines. The Ladies Night format, it said, was meant to give women across skill levels a setting to learn and play without pressure over experience.
Teamwork, respect between opponents, and a supportive atmosphere were among the qualities the organizers said they wanted the day to reinforce. They characterized the matches as competitive but good-natured, with participants showing up for one another throughout the bracket.
The organizing group operates under the slogan “No Rules. Just Be Kind. Papawis Life!”, and says its programming extends beyond individual tournaments to a broader push for inclusive, active community life among Qatar residents.
