The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) has received the prestigious ‘Best New Banknote Issue’ award for 2025 for its Dh500 polymer banknote in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region. The recognition was announced at the High Security Printing EMEA conference in Basel, Switzerland, in early February.
Designed to reflect the UAE’s sustainability efforts, the banknote incorporates state-of-the-art security features, including three-dimensional designs and an advanced surface-applied foil stripe—the largest in the region. This follows the success of the Dh1,000 note, which won the same award in 2023.
The Dh500 note, part of the UAE’s third polymer series, was printed by Oumolat Security Printing, a subsidiary of CBUAE. It entered circulation on November 30, 2023, and aligns with the country’s vision of promoting a green economy. Polymer banknotes are more durable, recyclable, and environmentally friendly compared to traditional paper notes.
On the front, the banknote showcases the Terra Sustainability Pavilion in Expo City Dubai, symbolizing the UAE’s commitment to sustainability. The reverse features the Museum of the Future, alongside iconic landmarks like Emirates Towers and Burj Khalifa, which harnesses solar energy for power.
In line with the CBUAE’s focus on inclusivity, the note also includes Braille symbols to assist visually impaired individuals in identifying its value.
Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, CBUAE’s assistant governor and chairman of Oumolat Security Printing, said in a WAM report the award highlights the UAE’s leadership in sustainable and innovative banking solutions.
