UAE: Man who beat red light and wrecked a car ordered to pay AED 30,000

A driver who caused a multi-vehicle crash by speeding through a red signal has been directed to compensate one of his victims, following a ruling from the Al Ain Court of Civil, Commercial and Administrative Cases.

According to Gulf Today, the court set the payout at AED 30,000 for a motorist whose car was wrecked beyond repair in the collision. The victim had been traveling in his proper lane and observing traffic regulations when the other driver, moving carelessly and without regard for the signal, plowed into his vehicle and struck several others.

The injured party had gone to court seeking a larger sum, asking that the responsible driver be ordered to pay AED 60,000 to cover both material losses and moral harm. He also requested legal interest calculated from the day he filed his claim through to the point of full settlement, along with coverage of the associated fees and costs.

In laying out his case, the claimant explained that his insurer had already released AED 65,000 toward the damage. That figure, however, fell short of what he actually owed. His car had originally been financed through an AED 80,000 bank loan, and closing out that debt required him to add AED 7,000 of his own money on top of the insurance payment.

Beyond the financial shortfall, he told the court that losing access to his vehicle left him paying for alternative transportation, and he described the emotional and psychological toll the crash had taken on him.
