A defendant in Abu Dhabi has been directed to pay AED 40,000 to an employee he was found to have harmed during a workplace confrontation, according to a ruling by the Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Cases Court.
The employee had gone to court seeking a far larger sum. Gulf Today reported that his lawsuit demanded AED 100,000 for the material and moral injury he said the incident caused, along with recovery of case-related costs and legal fees.
Central to the worker’s claim was an account of what happened while he was on the job. He told the court that the defendant hurled a water bottle at him, spat on him, and subjected him to insults in front of others. That conduct, he argued, left him with serious psychological and moral distress in addition to material damage.
Weighing the documents and evidence submitted to it, the court concluded that the defendant had committed a wrongful act that resulted in harm to the plaintiff.
On that basis, the court set compensation for the moral damage at AED 40,000 and ordered the defendant to pay the employee accordingly.
The judgment, resting on the established wrongdoing and the harm shown to follow from it, points to what the law holds may await those whose abusive or insulting behavior injures another person, especially where the victim is a worker engaged in official duties at the time.
