A significant stride towards alleviating traffic congestion in Dubai has been announced, with plans for a Dh700 million project aimed at reducing travel time on Al Khail Road by 30%. The initiative, unveiled on Sunday, entails the construction of five bridges along the highway, promising smoother traffic flow.
The Al Khail Road improvement project, set to address persistent traffic bottlenecks, will be executed at various locations including Zabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadeer Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle. The project’s contract has been awarded, signaling the beginning of extensive road enhancement works.
Al Khail Road, a pivotal thoroughfare in Dubai stretching from the Business Bay crossing to its junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, will witness upgrades aimed at enhancing its capacity. Mattar Al Tayer, the director-general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), emphasized that the project will not only benefit Al Khail Road but also bolster traffic flow along parallel roads like Sheikh Zayed, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, and Emirates roads.
The RTA has outlined seven key locations along Al Khail Road slated for improvement. These include Zabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadeer Al Tair, Jumeirah Village Circle, Al Jaddaf, and Business Bay. Each location will see tailored enhancements such as the construction of new bridges, widening of lanes, and improvements in traffic connectivity.
The project’s scope encompasses a range of measures to streamline traffic movements, including the construction of three-lane bridges, two-lane bridges, and additional lanes at strategic points. These measures aim to not only enhance traffic flow but also increase the road’s capacity to accommodate the growing vehicular demand in Dubai.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve the commuting experience for thousands of motorists who rely on Al Khail Road daily. This initiative aligns with Dubai’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of residents and visitors alike.
In a nod to previous efforts, the RTA highlighted its completion of upgrades to Al Khail Road in 2012, which saw the transformation of roundabouts into flyovers, marking a pivotal step in enhancing the road’s efficiency and safety.
