Incheon International Airport has introduced a bed bug detection campaign led by a specially trained sniffer dog named Ceco, following concerns over potential infestations after the Paris Olympics. Ceco, a two-year-old beagle, is the only dog in South Korea trained to detect bed bugs through their pheromones and can inspect a standard hotel room in under two minutes, according to Kim Min-su of pest control company Cesco.
The initiative is a response to last year’s bed bug outbreak in Paris, where the insects were reported in various public places, sparking nationwide concern ahead of the Games. To prevent a similar situation in South Korea, the government has collaborated with Cesco, the country’s transportation and security ministries, and the disease control and prevention agency. The efforts include increased disinfection of flights from Paris and heightened vigilance at the airport.
Ceco and his team will remain on duty at Incheon Airport until September 8, ensuring the safe return of athletes, fans, and officials from the recently concluded Paris Olympics, where South Korea secured 13 gold medals.
