Public school teachers and other government employees can look forward to enhanced healthcare benefits in the coming year. The Department of Education (DepEd) announced that under Executive Order No. 64, eligible government civilian personnel, including teachers, will receive an annual medical allowance of up to P7,000. This new allowance aims to help subsidize healthcare costs, particularly those covered by health maintenance organizations (HMO).
Education Secretary Sonny Angara highlighted that pooling these resources could lead to comprehensive insurance coverage for educators. The DepEd emphasized that this new benefit represents a significant increase from the P500 medical allowance provided in 2020, which was initially designed to cover diagnostic tests.
In addition to the medical allowance, DepEd reminded its personnel that they are also eligible to file claims under the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS)-issued Personal Accident Insurance (GPAI) policy, which covers accidental death or dismemberment up to P100,000 and provides up to P30,000 in medical reimbursements for injuries.
Moreover, starting in the School Year 2025-2026, public school teachers will see their teaching allowance, commonly known as the “chalk allowance,” doubled to P10,000 per year. This increase comes under Republic Act 11997, also known as the Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act, which was co-authored by Angara during his time in the Senate.
