PH Independence Day celebration in Bahrain highlights culture, service, and bayanihan

The Filipino community in Bahrain commemorated the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence through a series of activities that began with a solemn flag-raising ceremony at the Philippine Embassy grounds in Manama on 12 June 2026.

The event was led by H.E. Gines Jaime Ricardo D. Gallaga, the Philippine Ambassador to Bahrain, alongside Madam Moira G. Gallaga, and featured the special participation of Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). They were accompanied by a distinguished group of Philippine government officials, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of various agencies to promote the welfare and interests of the Filipino community in Bahrain. More than just a ceremonial event, this occasion underscored the Philippine government’s ongoing dedication to providing responsive services, protection, and support to overseas Filipinos through strong inter-agency partnership.

Among the attendees were Labor Attaché Dr. Orville A. Ballitoc from the Migrant Workers Office (MWO), OWWA Welfare Officer Juvilyn Anns B. Gumabay, Vice Consul Charlie Florian T. Prenicolas, and SSS Representative Dalyn Mendoza, whose participation illustrated the government’s unified efforts to ensure the welfare of overseas Filipinos. Additionally, Capt. Noel Escalona, Senior National Representative of the Armed Forces of the Philippines to the Combined Maritime Forces (AFPSNR to CMF) was also present.

As part of the day’s activities, Secretary Cacdac witnessed the distribution of cash assistance through the Aksyon Fund Assistance Program to distressed OFWs and individuals affected by recent regional developments. Following the assistance distribution, Secretary Cacdac, together with officials of the Philippine Embassy in Manama, engaged with the Filipino community during a luncheon and meet-and-greet gathering at the Radisson Blu Diplomat Hotel in the Diplomatic Area, attended by approximately 110 Filipino community leaders.

Secretary Cacdac’s visit to Bahrain reflected a high-level engagement with leaders of the Filipino community centered on strengthening the welfare of OFWs. It also highlighted the broad range of government support services available to them such as emergency medical assistance, financial aid, and repatriation support particularly important amid heightened regional tensions.

The discussion likewise underscored the importance of upskilling, skills training, and continuing education in enhancing the competencies of OFWs, enabling them to remain competitive in the global labor market while improving their prospects for sustainable employment and successful reintegration whether abroad or eventual return to the Philippines.

Secretary Cacdac also recognized the strength and unity of the Filipino community, commending its unwavering commitment to supporting and assisting fellow OFWs, particularly during challenging times and emergencies.

Nelliemar V. Beegonia, 42, a household worker from Mt. Province who has been living in Bahrain for 17 years, shared that celebrating Philippine Independence Day reminds her and fellow OFWs of their identity, freedom, and the sacrifices they make for their families.

“This day reminds me of who I am as a Filipino and the value of the freedom we enjoy. It also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices we make every day for our families back home,” she said.

Beegonia, the cultural officer of Cordillera OFWs Solidatiry Bahrain and a leader of Kabalikat Gaaci Kabsat Bahrain chapter also expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to personally engage with DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac. “Being able to voice our concerns and aspirations directly to government officials gave me hope and reassurance that the welfare of OFWs remains a priority,” she added.

Filipino cuisine and native delicacies were also prominently featured, offering attendees a taste of home through a wide array of traditional dishes and snacks that highlighted the diversity of Philippine culinary heritage. The food fair contributed to the joyful atmosphere and served as a cultural bridge among generations of Filipinos in Bahrain.

A health and wellness outreach initiative was carried out through the collaborative efforts of several medical partners. Volunteers and healthcare professionals from Medici Global and Alwali Training and Development Center (ATDC) provided free blood pressure monitoring and blood glucose screening services to attendees. Meanwhile, Al Hilal Hospital and KIMS Medical Center offered medical, eye, and dental consultations, as well as laboratory services, including blood extraction for essential diagnostic tests.
