PH eyes Luxembourg as new destination for healthcare workers

Luxembourg may be opening its doors to Filipino nurses and caregivers, following a bilateral meeting between the Department of Migrant Workers and the European country’s top diplomatic representative to Manila.

Officer-in-Charge Undersecretary Felicitas Q. Bay led the DMW delegation that received Non-Resident Ambassador Michel Leesch of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg at the agency’s Mandaluyong City headquarters on May 14. Undersecretaries Jainal T. Rasul Jr., Assistant Secretaries Julyn S. Ambito-Fermin and Levinson C. Alcantara, and Director Jerome P. Yanson also joined the discussions.

Central to the talks were potential deployment pathways for Filipino healthcare professionals to Luxembourg, a small but prosperous European nation with a growing demand for skilled medical workers. Both governments signaled their intent to pursue arrangements grounded in ethical recruitment, workers’ rights protections, and compliance with international labor standards.

The meeting forms part of the Philippines’ broader push to widen overseas employment options for its workforce, particularly in sectors where Filipino professionals have built a strong global reputation. Luxembourg’s interest in the Filipino healthcare workforce reflects that recognition, though no formal agreements were announced following the initial engagement.
