The prized labels that Pampanga officials wore to survey inundated communities became the flashpoint of a public backlash, and Governor Lilia Pineda has now stepped forward to express regret over the episode.
Speaking on One News’ “Storycon,” Pineda pushed back against the notion that luxury attire is her norm, insisting the outfits captured on camera did not reflect a habitual taste for extravagance. She said the pieces she happened to have on were simply whatever came to hand that day. “Hindi ako maluhong tao… Sabi ko nga, kapag umaga, kung ano mo ang nadampot mo, ayun na lang ang susuot mo,” she said.
She framed the field visits as a matter of duty rather than display. “Ginagawa namin ang obligasyon namin. Ginagawa naman namin ang trabaho namin,” the governor said.
The uproar traces to images circulated on the Pampanga Provincial Information Office’s Facebook page and across social media. As reported by Politiko, users zeroed in on the governor appearing in a Prada shirt paired with a Burberry jacket as she checked on households near the damaged section of Sto. Cristo Dam. PhilNews reported that Vice Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda was photographed in Balmain, while San Fernando Mayor Vilma Balle-Caluag drew notice for a Burberry jacket worn with Calvin Klein leggings.
Comment sections filled quickly with sarcasm and reproach. Some online users mocked the scene as resembling a fashion runway rather than a disaster survey, while others accused the officials of losing touch with residents whose homes and belongings had been ruined by the water.
The clothing controversy landed as Pampanga endured one of its most punishing flood seasons in recent memory. The province has sat under a state of calamity since mid-August, with hundreds of barangays submerged and tens of thousands of families displaced by relentless monsoon rains and successive typhoons. Much of the low-lying terrain in towns such as Masantol and Macabebe has stayed waterlogged because silted rivers cannot channel runoff from Nueva Ecija and the Sierra Madre out to Manila Bay.
Beyond defending the wardrobe question, Pineda has repeatedly pressed for structural fixes to the province’s chronic flooding, calling for dredging of the Pampanga River and its tributaries and a halt-and-review of unfinished flood-control works to test whether they can withstand heavier monsoon surges.
