No rival, no problem: Romualdez keeps top House post for 20th Congress

Leyte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has been re-elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives, maintaining his leadership for the 20th Congress with overwhelming support from fellow lawmakers.

Romualdez ran unopposed and was backed by 269 House members during the session on Monday, while 34 lawmakers chose to abstain.

Quezon 2nd District Rep. Jay-jay Suarez, who nominated him, praised Romualdez’s leadership, saying, “It is in moments like these that leadership matters most… tested, proven, and deeply felt across this chamber and beyond.” He credited Romualdez for transforming the House into a body responsive to the Filipino people and grounded in unity, service, and progress.

The nomination was seconded by key figures including Ilocos Norte Rep. Sandro Marcos, Quezon Rep. Wilfrido Mark Enverga, Antipolo Rep. Ronaldo Puno, Misamis Oriental Rep. Yevgeny Emano, and TUCP Rep. Raymond Mendoza.

Even before the opening session, Romualdez had already secured a “supermajority” of support, with many lawmakers signing a manifesto affirming their backing for his continued Speakership, according to House Assistant Majority Leader Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong.

Romualdez, who leads the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), has served in the House for multiple terms since 2007. He first became Speaker during the 19th Congress and played a central role in recent political events, including the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte earlier this year.
