Nine prisoners in Sharjah have regained their freedom. These individuals, previously incarcerated for financial offenses and unpaid fines, were liberated thanks to the generous intervention of the Faraj Fund, which cleared their debts totaling Dh291,000.
According to a Gulf News report, Major General Saif Zari Al Shamsi, the Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, announced the release of these prisoners, who rejoined their families on December 27. The release coincided with an ‘Open Day’, marking a joyful reunion for many who had been separated from their loved ones, interacting only through glass panels for years.
The gesture was not only a benevolent one but also a recognition of the prisoners’ good conduct during their time at the Sharjah Punitive and Correctional Institution. Maj Gen Al Shamsi highlighted the institution’s commitment to rehabilitating inmates, noting various initiatives aimed at preparing them for a productive return to society.
This announcement was made during the celebration of GCC Inmates Week at the headquarters of the Punitive and Correctional Institution in Sharjah. The event was graced by the presence of several dignitaries, including Brigadier Ahmed Haji Al Sarkal, Brigadier Abdullah Ibrahim bin Nassar, and Brigadier General Dr Ali Ahmed Bu Alzoud, along with department directors, officers, strategic partners, and families of inmates.
Maj Gen Al Shamsi took the opportunity to thank the strategic partners from various departments and charitable societies for their invaluable contribution to improving the lives of inmates.
Colonel Mona Srour Al Shuwaihi, the Deputy Director of the Punitive and Correctional Institution Department, emphasized the positive impact of the Unified GCC Inmate Week. She spoke about the importance of rehabilitation, correction, and education programs in fostering optimism and motivation among inmates.
The ceremony included the screening of a film titled ‘Adam’s Tree’, produced by the Sharjah Police General Command, and a dialogue segment led by Lieutenant Colonel Dr Muhammad Ahmed Al Shirawi and journalist Fahd Heikal.
In a fitting conclusion to the event, Maj Gen Al Shamsi honored the partners whose support was crucial to the success of the week’s activities and programs.
