New weight loss challenge in UAE offers up to AED300 per kilogram in cash prizes

RAK Hospital, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Prevention Ras Al Khaimah, has announced the launch of the 4th edition of the RAK Biggest Weight Loser Challenge 2024 (RBWLC 24). The 12-week community initiative, starting on December 16 and concluding on March 4, World Obesity Day, aims to encourage healthier lifestyles and combat obesity.

The competition, which has seen significant success in previous editions, will have an awards ceremony on March 6. Registrations are currently open through the competition website. In its last iteration, 99% of participants were classified as obese with a BMI above 30, and many suffered from comorbidities like high blood pressure, diabetes, and arthritis.

This year, the RBWLC 24 retains its Physical, Virtual, and Corporate categories and introduces a new category for school children and staff. This innovative approach aims to foster healthy habits among the younger generation and promote friendly competition between schools.

Cash prizes are set to be awarded in the Physical category, with top achievers winning Dh300, Dh200, and Dh100 per kilogram of weight lost, for both male and female participants. The Virtual category offers a range of enticing rewards, including staycations, health and holiday packages, dining vouchers, gym memberships, and more.

Special recognition and prizes are also earmarked for individuals and teams showing the highest percentage of weight loss in their respective categories.

Dr. Raza Siddiqui, Executive Director of RAK Hospital, emphasized the challenge’s role as a flagship health initiative in the country, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to raising awareness about obesity and its associated health risks. The inclusion of schools in this year’s challenge is a strategic effort to inspire young role models and build a healthier future.

Prof. Adrian Kennedy, Chief Wellness Officer at Arabian Wellness & Lifestyle Management, stressed that the RBWLC 24 goes beyond competition. It aligns with national health objectives, offering comprehensive lifestyle and chronic disease management programs to transition individuals from illness to wellness.
