In a significant move to unite Filipino expatriates around the globe, a new organization named BagKat (Bagong Katipunan ng Bayan) was officially established on July 7, 2024, in Dubai by a group of Filipino business owners. This date is symbolic, coinciding with the founding of the original Katipunan in 1892, which played a pivotal role in the Philippine Revolution.
The founding members of BagKat, many of whom are successful entrepreneurs in Dubai, gathered on August 19, 2024, to formalize their commitment to this cause. The date is historically significant as it marks the discovery of the original Katipunan, which ultimately spurred the revolution against Spanish rule.
BagKat’s mission is to foster unity among Filipinos, promote cultural pride, and empower its members through leadership, service, and education. The organization is actively expanding its reach by establishing chapters across the Middle East and the Philippines, aiming to unite Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and Filipinos worldwide under a common goal of nation-building.
For OFWs, BagKat presents a unique opportunity. Membership offers access to a network of individuals committed to making a positive impact both abroad and in the Philippines. Moreover, BagKat’s founders have secured partnerships with various companies, providing members with exclusive discounts and benefits, making life easier for OFWs in Dubai and beyond.
Members of BagKat can advance through different ranks within the organization, starting as a Katipon and progressing to Kawal, Mandirigma, Gat, and higher, depending on their contributions and dedication. The organization also provides a Kartilya, outlining the values and responsibilities expected of its members.
Beyond the sense of community and opportunities for personal growth, BagKat members enjoy several exclusive benefits, including discounts on services and products, access to professional development workshops, and involvement in community service projects that uplift Filipino communities abroad.
BagKat has an exciting calendar of events planned, including the induction of new members, leadership seminars, and community service initiatives. The organization is also advocating for Andrés Bonifacio to be recognized as the first president of the Philippines, alongside José Rizal as a co-national hero, and is campaigning for August 23 to be acknowledged as the true Philippine Independence Day.
BagKat is more than just an organization; it is a movement. Filipinos worldwide are invited to join and make a difference, honoring the legacy of their forefathers while building a brighter future for the nation.
