Malta, a jewel in the Mediterranean known for its rich history of chivalry, is the adopted home of a distinguished Filipino, Richard Joseph ‘Shin’ Valeroso. Shin, the first and only Filipino to be knighted as a Templar on the island, blends his strong cultural roots with an adventurous spirit and a deep commitment to community service, earning him a unique place in his community.
Born into a modest family in the Philippines, where his mother was a school teacher and his father a family driver, Shin was raised in a Catholic environment.
“I was always active, participating in everything from school plays to sports and arts competitions,” he recalls with The Global Filipino Magazine.
His zeal for engagement has not waned; today, he is an avid traveler, vlogger, and advanced scuba diver, having explored 44 countries to date.
Shin’s decision to work abroad was driven not just by financial motives but by a profound desire to explore new cultures and experiences.
“Living abroad is different from traveling. You get to understand the local life, which is something you can’t fully grasp just by visiting,” Shin explains.
His professional journey has taken him from a stock clerk in the Philippines to a customer protection officer at Mr. Green Ltd. in Malta, with stints in Singapore and Japan along the way.
Templar Knighthood and community service
On November 11, 2023, Shin was knighted as a Templar Knight, an honor bestowed by the Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem, primarily in recognition of his extensive charitable work.
“Being knighted was not just an honor, but a reinforcement of my commitment to helping others,” he says proudly.
Shin is also a dedicated Freemason and a member of the Round Table Malta, through which he supports various charitable foundations.
Shin’s involvement in these organizations allows him to extend his charitable efforts across multiple communities, helping not only Maltese citizens but also fellow Filipinos in distress.
“It’s about giving back to the community that has embraced me and extending help to those in need,” he shares.
His mother and he co-founded the Pledge Microfoundation in the Philippines, which assists underprivileged children with educational resources and support.
“This is about creating opportunities for those who need them most, something I’ve been passionate about long before becoming a Templar Knight,” Shin adds.
Looking to the future, Shin envisions eventually returning to the Philippines to settle down and start a business, using his international experience and savings to make a positive impact back home.
“My goal is to continue making a difference, whether here in Malta or back in the Philippines,” he states.
To his fellow overseas Filipinos, Shin offers this advice: “You are not alone. Seek help from fellow kababayans and never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Take on challenges and opportunities with a calculated decision. Resilience is key, and remember, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.”
