An ASEAN-wide maritime cooperation framework moved closer to reality Friday as Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. voiced support for a landmark declaration among the bloc’s leaders, speaking at the 48th ASEAN Summit Plenary in Cebu.
Central to the Philippines’ position is a proposal to host a dedicated regional body. “We recognize the importance of maritime cooperation and look forward to the adoption of the ASEAN Leaders’ Declaration on Maritime Cooperation,” Marcos said, adding that the initiative “includes the Philippines’ proposal to establish an ASEAN Maritime Center, which will serve as an important platform for maritime cooperation in coordination with relevant ASEAN and ASEAN-led mechanisms.”
Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro had laid the groundwork ahead of the summit, stressing that the proposed declaration reflects the complex, layered nature of maritime issues facing the region and the need for stronger coordination among member-states.
The push for an ASEAN Maritime Center in the Philippines carries added weight this year, as Manila holds the ASEAN chairmanship for 2026 — giving it direct influence over the agenda and outcomes of the bloc’s major meetings.
