A 29-year-old resident of Cebu City is being held by police after allegedly opening fire on a neighbor who had repeatedly asked him for a share of his gambling winnings, according to reports on the incident.
Investigators said the suspect could be charged with frustrated homicide.
The wounded man, aged 33, sustained a gunshot injury to the arm. He was described as being in stable condition following the attack.
The dispute traced back to the previous week, when the suspect reportedly won P500 playing the online game “Scatter.” Every subsequent encounter between the two men allegedly ended the same way, with the older neighbor pressing him for a P50 cut of the prize.
The practice at the center of the quarrel — known locally as balato, the customary sharing of winnings with friends or neighbors — is a long-standing social expectation in many Filipino communities rather than any legal obligation.
