A man from Telangana, India, has been arrested after posting a video online in which he cooked and ate a peacock curry, causing widespread outrage. Kodam Pranay Kumar, an aspiring social media influencer, was taken into custody on Monday after police confirmed through additional videos on his phone that the bird used in his curry dish was indeed a peacock, a protected national symbol in India.
Peacocks, known for their vibrant blue feathers and cultural significance, are safeguarded under stringent wildlife protection laws. Kumar is currently being held on a 14-day remand under the Wildlife Protection Act, with the court set to determine whether he will remain in jail or be granted bail.
The video, reportedly created to attract more views, has since been removed from Kumar’s channel. However, it quickly drew condemnation online, with many criticizing Kumar for promoting illegal wildlife consumption and disrespecting a revered national symbol.
Authorities are also investigating how Kumar obtained the peacock, as its population has been declining due to urbanization and habitat loss, leading to strict legal protections against harm.
