Editing a carousel post on Instagram no longer means starting over from scratch.
The platform has begun rolling out a feature that allows users to reorder photos and videos within a published carousel — a change that eliminates one of the format’s most persistent frustrations since its introduction in 2017.
Until now, the sequence of slides in a carousel was permanent once posted. Anyone who uploaded images in the wrong order, or simply wanted to restructure a post after publishing, had no choice but to delete it entirely and reupload — forfeiting all existing likes and comments in the process.
The new functionality works through a long-press and drag gesture, letting users shift slides into a different arrangement without touching anything else in the post. Creators who rely on carousel sequencing for branding consistency or visual storytelling now have the ability to adjust that order at any point after going live.
The update does have limits. Adding new photos or videos to an existing carousel remains off the table — that still requires publishing a separate post. What changes is only the arrangement of content already uploaded.
Carousel posts have grown into one of Instagram’s more engagement-heavy formats. A 2024 study by Metricool found they tend to outperform single-image posts because users spend longer interacting with them.
The rollout prompted commentary on X, with many users noting the timing. Some pointed out that carousels have been on the platform since 2017, prompting jokes about the gap between the format’s launch and this particular fix. Others took the occasion to push for additional tools — including a follower management feature that would show who follows a user and who does not, a function currently handled through third-party apps since Instagram has no native equivalent.
Instagram has gradually expanded what users can do with carousels over the past year, including the ability to delete individual slides from a published post and an increase in the maximum number of slides allowed per upload.
