Filipino stand-up star Jo Koy takes center stage as 2024 Golden Globes host

The Golden Globe Awards named Filipino comedian and actor Jo Koy as the host for its 2024 ceremony. This move comes as Hollywood eagerly anticipates the kickoff of its awards season after enduring historic writers and actors strikes.

Jo Koy, aged 52, expressed his excitement and pride in a news release on Thursday. “I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special,” he stated. Koy also referenced his Filipino heritage, adding, “This is that moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud. Mahal Kita!”

Koy’s journey to this prestigious hosting role began with a stand-up comedy career in Las Vegas. He has since sold out numerous concert halls and theaters nationwide, often focusing on themes related to his family and Filipino culture in his shows. His rise to fame includes several acclaimed stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix, such as “Live From the Los Angeles Forum” and “Comin’ in Hot.” In 2018, he was honored as the stand-up comedian of the year by the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival.

Helen Hoehne, President of the Golden Globes, expressed her enthusiasm for Koy’s upcoming role, highlighting his “infectious energy and relatable humor.”

The 2024 Golden Globes, airing on CBS on January 7, will feature two new awards categories: best stand-up comedian on television, and cinematic and box office achievement. These additions are part of the ceremony’s efforts to regain prominence following recent challenges, including a significant viewership decline and controversies surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Leading the film nominations for the 2024 Golden Globes are “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” The event, overseen by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge, marks a new chapter in the history of the Golden Globes.
