Filipino expatriate in UAE shares a journey marked by music and education

Amidst Dubai’s dynamic landscape, where modernity and tradition converge, Alvin Castillo Mangoma emerges as a symbol of inspiration and unwavering commitment. This 34-year-old Filipino expatriate embodies his life and career philosophy — “Harmony in passion, rhythm in patience, and melody in perseverance” — through his role as an IB MYP Music Teacher at Ambassador International Academy. Having spent five years enriching the cultural tapestry of Dubai, Alvin shares with The Global Filipino Magazine a narrative filled with personal growth, steadfast determination, and the impactful role of music in bridging diverse worlds.

Alvin’s voyage into the realm of music education began with his recruitment in 2018 by GEMS Winchester School Dubai. His transition abroad marked the start of a rich professional path that saw him teaching at various institutions, including Ain Al Fayedah Middle School, under the guidance of Blooms Education and ADEK. Reflecting on his career highlights, Alvin expresses profound gratitude for the opportunities to nurture his passion for music education and inspire young minds.

“I am deeply passionate about music and education, and my journey as a music teacher and choir conductor has been one filled with growth, learning, and unforgettable experiences,” Alvin shares.

His tenure at Ambassador International Academy in Dubai has allowed him to further his commitment to ensuring students excel and find joy in music, embodying his belief in the transformative power of education and music.

The call of overseas opportunity

The decision to move abroad was driven by a desire to support his family and seize personal and professional growth opportunities on an international platform. Alvin was drawn to Dubai’s vibrant music scene and cultural exchange opportunities, seeing it as a stage to enhance his skills and engage with a broad spectrum of musical experiences.

“The allure of Dubai as a hub for cultural exchange and artistic collaboration was undeniable,” Alvin recalls.

This move was not just about financial stability but also about fulfilling a dream to make a meaningful impact in the music world.

Despite the successes, Alvin’s journey was not without its challenges. The separation from his family in the initial years was a struggle he faced with resilience, supported by the love and encouragement of his loved ones. This period of hardship strengthened his resolve, teaching him the importance of family, faith, and perseverance.

Reflecting on his journey, Alvin emphasizes the significance of his family’s support, stating, “They were my beacon of hope, my source of motivation, and my reason for persevering through the hardships.”

Vision for the future

Looking ahead, Alvin and his wife share a dream of establishing their own music school and tutorial center. This vision is more than a career aspiration; it is a commitment to fostering the growth of future generations passionate about music. Alvin also aims to engage in outreach activities to promote music education, believing in its transformative power.

“Our envisioned music school and tutorial center represent more than just a business venture. It embodies a shared passion for education and a genuine desire to contribute to the cultural and artistic landscape,” Alvin elucidates.

To fellow Filipinos abroad facing challenges, Alvin offers heartfelt advice: stay true to yourself, prioritize family and faith, and trust the process. He underscores the importance of humility, patience, and the support of trustworthy individuals in overcoming obstacles.

“In the midst of the challenges, prioritize family and keep your faith in God. They serve as your pillars of strength, guiding you through decisions and challenges,” Alvin advises.
