Filipino executive in Dubai shares journey of resilience and growth in the corporate world

The journey of Mylene De Los Ama in Dubai—a city renowned for its ambitious spirit and cultural diversity—echoes a profound narrative of resilience, growth, and thankfulness. At 43, her path from the Philippines to the UAE has been one marked by boldness and a continuous quest for personal development. As an HR DSA/Business Development Executive at Derby Group of Companies, Mylene’s account extends well beyond her professional success, illustrating a significant evolution of her personal identity and strength.

Mylene embarked on her overseas adventure in June 2006, beginning her career in customer service with Al Attar Properties. Her career trajectory took a significant turn in 2011 when she joined Derby Group, marking the start of a 12-year tenure that saw her roles evolve through the years, particularly during the challenging times of the recession and the recent pandemic.

“Throughout my journey, the highlight of my career has been continuous self-growth and adaptation,” Mylene reflects, showcasing her resilient spirit.

The decision to work abroad was fueled by a desire to support her family, a sentiment shared by many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). Mylene’s professional path, however, began long before her move to Dubai. From being a Student Assistant at CEU in Manila to excelling in customer service at Globe Telecom Philippines, her early experiences laid the groundwork for her relentless work ethic and dedication.

Mylene’s current role with Derby Group transcends the conventional bounds of her job description. She describes Derby Group as her “second home,” expressing immense gratitude for the mentorship received from Ashok Kalyanpur, the Founder and Group CEO, along with Francis, and Saneep. This trio’s support has been pivotal, enabling her to excel not only in her professional domain but also as an influencer and affiliate brand ambassador for various fashion brands. “Work and Play,” she muses, perfectly capturing her approach to a career that blends professionalism with passion.

But life in a foreign land comes with its share of struggles. Mylene candidly shares the challenges she faced, emphasizing the importance of family, faith, and forgiveness in overcoming adversities.

“Life is not easy. Struggle is real,” she admits, yet her unyielding spirit and deep-rooted faith have been her guiding lights through the trials.

Looking towards the future, Mylene remains grounded in the present, trusting in the divine plans laid out for her. Her advice to fellow kabayans (countrymen) echoes the lessons she’s learned: “Have Faith, always be grateful from small to biggest thing.” She emphasizes living in reality, pursuing happiness, and letting go of what no longer serves one’s growth.

Mylene’s story is punctuated with gratitude, not only towards her mentors and colleagues but also towards her spiritual guides and close friends who have been pillars of support. Her narrative is a reminder that behind every OFW’s journey lies a tapestry of sacrifices, learnings, and unyielding hope.

In her own words, echoing Toni Gonzaga, “Let God be the center of our Lives, and there is only one GOD.” Mylene De Los Ama’s story is not just about a Filipino thriving abroad but about a human being finding her strength, learning to be enough, and inspiring others to do the same
