Filipino cyclists in the UAE to gather at Al Qudra for Kalayaan Ride 2026

Hundreds of Filipino cyclists across the Emirates are set to converge on the Al Qudra Cycling Track this Saturday, June 13, for a community ride marking the 128th year of Philippine independence.

Billed as “Salo Salo” — a Filipino term for a communal gathering or shared meal — this year’s Kalayaan Ride leans heavily into the social side of the sport, with a post-ride gathering scheduled for 8 a.m. once riders have completed their routes.

Participants can choose from three distances, each named after a major island group in the Philippines and each with its own staggered start. The longest, the Luzon route at 85 kilometres, rolls out first at 5:15 a.m. The 65-kilometre Visayas route follows at 5:40 a.m., while the shorter 50-kilometre Mindanao option begins at 6:10 a.m.

Organizers frame the event as a celebration of unity, friendship, solidarity, and cultural pride, anchored in the Filipino concept of bayanihan — the spirit of communal cooperation. Beyond the athletic component, the ride is positioned as an occasion for overseas Filipinos to express patriotism and strengthen ties within the diaspora’s cycling scene.

The 2026 edition continues a tradition established the previous year, when the inaugural ride was held under the “Unity Ride” banner to commemorate the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence. That first staging also aligned itself with the UAE’s Year of Community, presenting the gathering as both a marker of Filipino heritage and a contribution to wider community-building efforts in the host country.

Dozens of cycling groups are taking part, among them 63 Mafia, Dubai Roadies, Tambikers, Thunders, Solar Boys, and Wheels and Gears, alongside many others drawn from the broader Filipino Cycling Community in the Emirates.

The event is backed by the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai.
