Jose Efren Bagamasbad, a 67-year-old Filipino chess player, claimed sixth place at the Asian Seniors Championships held on August 19 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. According to an ABS-CBN News, Bagamasbad competed in the 65-year-old-and-above category, showcasing his skill against other seasoned players.
The Asian Seniors Championships, as reported by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), is an annual event featuring two categories: 50-64 years old and 65 years old and above. This isn’t Bagamasbad’s first appearance in this prestigious tournament. He earned the title of “International Master” in 2022 in New Zealand and emerged as the champion when the competition was held in the Philippines last year.
Philippine Ambassador Jaime A. FlorCruz praised Bagamasbad’s achievement, saying, “Efren’s triumph is proof of the importance of pursuing one’s passions, because there can be no limits if we put our minds to it.”
Looking ahead, Bagamasbad hopes to participate in the upcoming World Senior Championships in Portugal this November.
