Filipino barista from Al Ain named UAE’s second-fastest at Abu Dhabi speed contest

Speed under pressure earned Gene Carlo Arias a place on the podium in Abu Dhabi this week, where the Filipino coffee professional finished as 2nd Runner-Up at the second edition of the UAE Fastest Barista Competition.

Arias, who serves as Operations Manager at Vibrant Cafe & Roastery, took the title of second-fastest barista in the country on September 10, 2026. The result came with a cash award of AED 3,000.

The format leaves little room for hesitation. Competitors were tasked with producing eight distinct beverages inside an eight-minute window, a lineup that mixed several coffee styles with mocktails. Thirty baristas of varying nationalities and drawn from across the Emirates entered the running for the top spot.

This year’s staging was organized jointly by Coffee Market Innovation and Victoria Arduino, an Italian espresso machine maker that has become a fixture of the UAE’s specialty coffee scene. The company has served as official sponsor of the country’s national barista championships and, according to Qahwa World, hosted the inaugural edition of the fastest-barista contest at its Dubai Experience Lab in late 2025, when Andree Rios of ROR Coffee Solutions claimed the first title against a field of two dozen competitors.

For Arias, the placement carried weight beyond the prize. He framed the achievement as a chance to stand for the Filipino community on a stage shared with skilled peers from many backgrounds, pointing to the reputation Filipinos have built worldwide for commitment and skill across professions.

A decade in the Emirates’ coffee trade has shaped his path, he said, giving him room to develop his craft and work alongside people from other cultures in a country he credits with opening doors for him.

Adding to the meaning, in his view, is where he does that work. Vibrant Cafe & Roastery sits inside Kanad Hospital in Al Ain, a site with deep roots in the region’s story. Formerly called Oasis Hospital, it opened in November 1960 as the first hospital in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and remains the oldest operating hospital in the UAE.
