Alexandra “Alex” Eala, the 18-year-old top-ranked Filipina tennis sensation, showcased her unwavering determination and fighting spirit on the second day of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open 2024. Despite ultimately falling to her opponent, 31-year-old Magda Linette from Poland, Eala’s performance resonated deeply with the predominantly Filipino crowd in attendance.
Ranked 187th in the world and participating in only her ninth WTA Tour Tournament, Eala received a wild card entry to compete at the prestigious Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open against Linette, who is ranked 55th globally.
Ambassador Alfonso A. Ver, leading the enthusiastic Filipino supporters, expressed immense pride, stating, “This is a proud moment for the Philippines and the Filipino community in the UAE who witnessed how Alex gave her all.”
In response, Eala extended her gratitude to Ambassador Ver and the Filipino community, emphasizing, “I felt the love and support of my fellow Filipinos during the match,” noting that it made her feel as though she was competing in her hometown, with the crowd rallying behind her until the final point.
The Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open, presented by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, forms a significant part of the WTA Tour and is scheduled to continue until February 11, 2024, at the Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi.
