Fil-Am journalist Pablo Torre wins Pulitzer Prize for podcast exposing NBA salary cap scheme

A Filipino American sports journalist has claimed one of journalism’s highest honors, with Pablo Torre’s investigative podcast earning the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in Audio Reporting.

The Pulitzer board cited “Pablo Torre Finds Out” for what it described as a pioneering approach to live podcast journalism — specifically, the show’s investigation into how the Los Angeles Clippers may have circumvented the NBA’s salary cap by routing payments to a star player through an environmental company.

At the center of the investigation is Kawhi Leonard, whom the podcast linked to a reported four-year endorsement deal worth $28 million with Aspiration, a California-based environmental startup. A series of episodes released in September 2025 traced how that arrangement allegedly functioned as a financial channel outside the league’s standard compensation rules, raising compliance and transparency questions that reach well beyond the Clippers organization.

Torre acknowledged the recognition on social media, writing: “We are honored to have been named the winner of the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in Audio Reporting!”

The award draws wider attention to a format Torre has been refining — live podcast journalism built around detailed, reported investigation rather than commentary. The Clippers-Leonard-Aspiration series served as the centerpiece of the Pulitzer committee’s citation, underscoring how the show’s approach to financial accountability in professional sports set it apart from conventional sports media coverage.
