Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp go premium as Meta launches paid subscription tiers

WhatsApp users will now pay a lower monthly rate than their Facebook and Instagram counterparts under a new subscription structure Meta announced this week, as the company moves to build a revenue stream alongside its dominant advertising business.

Meta head of product Naomi Gleit unveiled the plans in an Instagram video, introducing Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus and WhatsApp Plus as globally available paid tiers. WhatsApp Plus is priced at $2.99 per month, while the Facebook and Instagram equivalents each carry a $3.99 monthly fee. Gleit said additional subscription offerings for businesses, creators and artificial intelligence products are also in development.

The Facebook and Instagram plans emphasize reach and analytics, giving subscribers access to improved audience metrics, story rewatch statistics, broader distribution and profile customization tools. WhatsApp Plus takes a different direction, centering on personalization features such as custom ringtones, premium stickers and the ability to change the app’s visual theme.

Meta’s stock climbed nearly three percent following the announcement — a signal of investor appetite for a model that reduces the company’s dependence on ad spend at a time when its capital expenditure is under close watch. The company has projected spending of between $125 billion and $145 billion this year, driven largely by AI infrastructure investment.

Gleit indicated that the various subscription products are intended to eventually merge under a unified brand called Meta One.

The paid tier model is not entirely new territory for the company. Meta introduced ad-free paid versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe in 2023 to satisfy EU data privacy requirements, offering users a choice between free, ad-supported access and a paid alternative without advertisements.
