Emirates puts safety first, reroutes San Francisco flight to London to help sick passenger

A traveler’s sudden illness sent an Emirates Airbus A380 on an hours-long detour to the United Kingdom this week, ending with hundreds of San Francisco-bound passengers spending an unplanned night in London.

Flight EK225 had left Dubai on the morning of July 29 bound for San Francisco International Airport, one of the carrier’s longest routes at roughly 8,100 miles. Roughly six hours into the journey, as the double-decker jet tracked across Russian airspace, a passenger fell seriously ill onboard, according to flight-tracking service Flightradar24, which noted the aircraft breaking from its planned path before turning toward Heathrow.

Rather than putting down at the nearest field, the crew pressed on toward London, a choice that added several hours of flying. The superjumbo touched down at Heathrow at 7:20 PM local time, some 12 hours after pushing back in Dubai. Aviation observers noted the destination was telling: had the situation been immediately life-threatening, the aircraft would more likely have diverted to the closest airport capable of receiving an A380 rather than continuing to a familiar Emirates hub.

Heathrow ranks among Emirates’ busiest stations outside Dubai, and that footprint on the ground shaped the decision. The airport handles several of the airline’s A380 rotations each day, giving the carrier the staff, gates, and hotel arrangements needed to absorb a full widebody’s worth of stranded travelers on short notice.

Emirates said the priority on landing was getting care to the person who had taken ill. A spokesperson told Al Khaleej newspaper the aircraft set down at Heathrow so the passenger could receive the medical attention required, and that those affected were put up in hotels and moved onto the earliest available departures leaving July 30.

The airline offered an apology for the upheaval. “Emirates apologises for any inconvenience this may have caused and reiterates that the safety of its passengers and crew remains its top priority,” the spokesperson said.

The rebooked service did not leave on time either. Scheduled out of Heathrow at 3:45 PM the next day, the flight was held back and finally pushed from the gate at 4:46 PM before continuing on to San Francisco.

Emirates operates a daily link between Dubai and San Francisco, part of a US network spanning a dozen cities.
