According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomy Society, the highly anticipated Eid al Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, is projected to occur on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. This estimation aligns with the Islamic consensus indicating the commencement of the month of Shawwal on the same day, following a 30-day fasting period.
Interestingly, the birth of the Shawwal crescent coincides with a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. This celestial occurrence suggests that the crescent’s appearance before midnight would likely make it visible after sunset the subsequent day across most Islamic regions.
Eid al Fitr holds immense religious, cultural, and spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide, symbolizing gratitude, renewal, and communal unity. It marks the culmination of a month-long period of fasting, prayer, and self-reflection observed during Ramadan.
On the day of Eid, Muslims partake in special prayers, known as Salat al Eid, conducted in mosques, open grounds, or large congregational areas. These prayers are accompanied by sermons emphasizing gratitude, compassion, and charitable giving. Following the prayers, families and friends gather to share festive meals and exchange gifts, further reinforcing the spirit of togetherness and joy associated with Eid al Fitr.
