Dipolog mom begs gov’t to bring home daughter killed by employer’s son in Beirut

A grieving mother from Dipolog City is calling on both the national and local governments for help after her daughter was shot dead inside a Beirut residence earlier this month.

Helen Zamoras, herself a former overseas worker, said her 31-year-old daughter Honeylith was killed on April 15 by the son of the household employer where she worked as a housekeeper. According to Helen, the two victims — Honeylith and her co-worker, Ronajean Gervoso of Antique — were in their room when the suspect went on a rampage and opened fire on them.

The suspect is now in Lebanese custody.

Helen is urging the national government to facilitate the repatriation of Honeylith’s remains, and has separately turned to Dipolog city officials for financial support to cover burial costs.

The Department of Migrant Workers confirmed the killings on April 21 — six days after the incident — saying both women had been long-time household workers at the same residence. DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the Philippine government is working with the Philippine Embassy in Lebanon and local authorities to push for a thorough investigation and the filing of appropriate charges.

“The Philippine government remains committed to securing justice for the victims and providing continued assistance to their families, including repatriation and access to benefits,” Cacdac said.

DMW Undersecretaries Bernard Olalia and Felicitas Bay are scheduled to visit the families of both victims in person.
