As the globe marks World Arthritis Day on 21st October 2023, the Middle East Arthritis Foundation (MEAF) prepares to host an enlightening event at the Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai, themed ‘Inspired by Patients…Driven by Passion’. This initiative emphasizes early identification of diverse autoimmune and rheumatic musculoskeletal disorders to enable better treatment and interventions.
There are over 100 varied forms of these conditions. Globally, osteoarthritis affects 20%, and in the UAE, a significant 20% of residents have some arthritis form. However, public awareness remains limited, resulting in care gaps.
Contrary to belief, arthritis is not just an aging consequence; it’s a top global disability cause. WHO data reveals 23 million individuals face Rheumatoid Arthritis, with this number potentially doubling by 2030.
Dr. Ghita Harifi, Consultant Rheumatologist, highlighted the event as a bridge for patients, caregivers, and experts to converse about the latest in treatment plans and challenges.
The day’s schedule runs from 8 am to 4 pm, featuring experts from fields such as rheumatology, mental health, and nutrition. Several sessions will be led by arthritis patients themselves, giving an authentic perspective on managing the disease.
One key segment, ‘Let’s Talk – Inside our Arthritis Journey’, will spotlight personal battles and achievements from both leading Rheumatologists and patients. MEAF aims to make patients active participants in their treatment process.
Dr. Humeira Badsha, MEAF’s Founding Member, expressed the urgent need for lifestyle adaptations and early diagnoses. This year, MEAF focuses on the power of positive thinking and community support.
Sessions during the event will address daily living with arthritis. Notably, Dr. Ahmed Abogamal will provide free arthritis detection hand ultrasounds. The day also features a yoga session, a dance session, and a Qigong demonstration by Master Can of ZenShaolin, tailored for arthritis patients.
Sanria Khan, a Rheumatoid Arthritis patient and MEAF Admin, emphasized the criticality of raising arthritis awareness, pointing out the issues arising from lack of knowledge.
The event promises engaging sessions, including a “Circles of Sharing and Caring” segment, where UAE patients and caregivers narrate their experiences.
