Caluag confirms he ordered YSpeak 2.0 episode pulled, cites Caritas values

A youth debate program’s vanishing third episode and its departure from broadcast television both trace back to a single source, Caritas Philippines confirmed Monday, with Executive Director Fr. Tito Caluag stepping forward to take responsibility for the takedown.

Posting on social media, Caluag said the call to pull the installment was his own and came only after weighing the organization’s standards and talking with those involved. He framed it as a decision that did not come easily.

“I wish to clarify that I, as the representative of Caritas Philippines, the producer of the show, was the one who asked that the episode be taken down. It was a difficult decision to make, but there are internal editorial guidelines and basic values of Caritas Philippines I needed to consider. Furthermore, there were other factors I had to take into consideration. I had discussed these with the people concerned” the statement read.

A separate question had also been circulating: why YSpeak 2.0 did not appear on ALLTV2 on May 30. According to Caluag, that change reflects a shift in strategy rather than a reaction to controversy, with producers aiming to build the show’s online footprint and connect with younger viewers through digital channels.

At the center of the episode in question was investigative journalist Christian Esguerra, whose remarks during the discussion touched on a number of political personalities and national concerns. He labeled Vice President Sara Duterte “evil” and cast doubt on the wins of Senators Robin Padilla and Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, asking, “Bakit at paano [nanalo].”

Esguerra pushed back after Caluag’s explanation, taking aim at the “internal editorial guidelines and basic values of Caritas Philippines” the priest had referenced. He pointed to a contradiction he saw in the timing: “It’s also ironic that during my guest appearance, I discussed how ‘self-censorship’ is ‘the worst form of censorship’ — which is exactly what the producer did.”
