Atty. Jimmy Bondoc believes Vice President Sara Duterte could still pursue the presidency in 2028 even if the Senate impeachment court finds her guilty, citing the possibility of legal challenges while the case remains under appeal.
Bondoc made the statement during an interview on Amoy Chico on True FM, where he discussed the potential consequences of a conviction and its implications for Duterte’s political plans.
Under Article XI of the 1987 Constitution, an impeachment conviction requires the support of two-thirds of all senators. A judgment may result in the official’s removal from office and disqualification from holding public office.
The potential penalty has become particularly significant because Duterte has publicly announced plans to run for president in the 2028 elections. A conviction in the impeachment case could carry perpetual disqualification from holding public office.
Bondoc, however, argued that an appeal could leave room for Duterte to pursue a candidacy while the legal challenge is pending.
“Remember may mga disqualified na senador na tumakbo pa rin,” giit ni Bondoc.
The impeachment proceedings against Duterte are being heard by the Senate sitting as an impeachment court.
The House prosecution has maintained that a conviction on even one article could result in Duterte’s removal from office and perpetual disqualification from holding public office.
The Senate’s impeachment rules provide that an impeached official may be convicted on any article if the required two-thirds vote is obtained.
