BINI receives Senate recognition for landmark Coachella performance

All eight members of P-pop group BINI appeared at the Senate plenary session on Wednesday, May 6, to formally receive recognition under a resolution filed by Senator Bam Aquino — nearly four weeks after the group made history as the first Filipino act to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Jhoanna, Maloi, Colet, Mikha, Aiah, Sheena, Stacey, and Gwen were present as the chamber took up Senate Resolution No. 370, which honors the group for its performances at the Mojave stage in Indio, California on April 10 and 17.

In the resolution, Aquino framed BINI’s Coachella appearances as evidence of the Philippine creative economy’s expanding global reach. “BINI’s participation in Coachella underscores the growing potential of the Philippine creative economy, demonstrating how Filipino talent can generate global demand, create economic opportunities, and strengthen the country’s presence in the global cultural and creative landscape,” the resolution read.

The senator noted that BINI incorporated distinctly Filipino elements into their Coachella set — among them the salakot, tropical-inspired costuming, and native musical influences — as markers of cultural identity on one of the world’s most-watched festival stages. Coachella draws more than 500,000 attendees across two weekends each year and has been headlined this cycle by Sabrina Carpenter and Justin Bieber.

Aquino also tied the group’s achievement to broader policy goals, saying BINI’s success aligns with state efforts to develop creative industries as engines of employment, innovation, and inclusive growth. “BINI’s achievement serves as an inspiration to young Filipinos, demonstrating that Filipino talent can thrive and gain recognition on the world stage through passion, discipline, and excellence,” he said.

The 45-minute set BINI delivered at the Mojave stage included ten songs, among them “Pantropiko,” “Karera,” and “Salamin, Salamin,” alongside the live debut of “Blush” from their new EP Signals, released the day before their first Coachella appearance.

The group has since announced a Signals World Tour set to launch later this summer, and members have said they are already at work on material for a follow-up EP.
