Abu Dhabi Airports announced on Thursday that its new, cutting-edge Terminal A at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) will begin operations in early November 2023. Known as the Midfield Terminal Building during its construction, the terminal aims to set new benchmarks in airport experience and significantly boost the city’s aviation capabilities.
Covering an expansive 742,000 square meters, Terminal A is set to become one of the world’s largest airport terminals. Once operational, it will be able to handle up to 45 million passengers annually, process 11,000 travelers per hour, and accommodate 79 aircraft simultaneously.
The facility will employ advanced biometric systems, allowing for a seamless and quick passenger experience from pre-travel stages to boarding. Other features include self-service kiosks, streamlined security checkpoints, and state-of-the-art baggage handling systems.
The new terminal marks a significant milestone in Abu Dhabi’s transportation infrastructure. It is expected to further strengthen the emirate as a preferred global destination for both leisure and business travelers while elevating its status as a vital hub for international trade.
Terminal A’s design, which has garnered international awards, blends modern aesthetics with functionality. In alignment with the UAE’s sustainability goals, the building incorporates energy-efficient lighting, advanced HVAC systems, and uses sustainable construction materials. A solar photovoltaic system on the terminal’s car park roof powers a 3-megawatt plant, reducing the facility’s carbon footprint by nearly 5,300 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
Travelers can look forward to a host of amenities, including lounges, relaxation zones, spa facilities, and 163 retail and food and beverage outlets.
His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Airports, said, “Terminal A is a new chapter in Abu Dhabi’s 55-year aviation history. It reflects our commitment to sustainable economic development and will serve as a cornerstone for tourism and trade.”
Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Interim CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, stated, “The new terminal underlines our goal to offer a premium airport experience and to meet the needs of the modern traveler, thereby strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position on the global stage.”
