OFW in UAE paves path from family business to global export success

Sally Joy Montoya’s story is a vivid portrayal of how familial roots in business can shape a person’s career trajectory. Born into a family engaged in various business ventures, including a cracker and candy factory and a lumber business, Sally’s early life was steeped in the ethos of entrepreneurship. This environment was her first classroom, where she absorbed the essentials of business management and marketing.

These formative experiences were crucial in shaping Sally’s career.

She recalls, “Growing up in a business-oriented family instilled in me the values of hard work and dedication. It was more than just observing; it was participating in a live business environment every day.”

This early exposure laid the groundwork for her future success in the business world.

Upon completing her degree in business, Sally ventured into her own lumber business, combining her family’s wisdom with her innovative ideas. Her business flourished, but the allure of international trade called her to new horizons.

Starting as an administrative staff member in the import-export industry, Sally rapidly ascended through the ranks, demonstrating her exceptional ability to navigate the complex world of global trade.

Embracing new challenges

Sally’s decision to work abroad was fueled by a childhood dream and an unquenchable thirst for new experiences. In 2008, she embarked on her international journey, starting in Singapore.

Reflecting on this decision, Sally shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, “Working abroad was a dream I had nurtured since my youth. When the opportunity presented itself, I seized it without hesitation, aiming to make my mark in the international business arena.”

Her career abroad has been marked by continuous learning and building valuable connections.

“What I enjoy most about my current role,” Sally shares, “is the endless learning opportunities and the relationships I’ve developed over the years. These experiences have not only enhanced my professional skills but also enriched my personal growth.”

Despite the financial benefits of working overseas, Sally faced challenges. She overcame these obstacles with resilience and the support of her family and mentors.

Her advice to fellow Filipinos abroad is rooted in her own experiences: “Self-discipline is the foundation of everything. It’s essential to stay focused and work hard to achieve your goals.”

Future aspirations and giving back

Looking ahead, Sally envisions a future where she can give back to her community. Her dream is to establish an organic farm and resort in her hometown, contributing to the local eco-tourism and supporting Philippine-made products through her export business. This plan reflects her desire to blend entrepreneurial success with sustainable and community-focused initiatives.

Her mantra, “learning is never-ending,” encapsulates her approach to both life and career – a continuous journey of growth and discovery.
