Davao native breaks boundaries, shines as HR officer in Dubai’s corporate world

Embarking on a journey from the strict, traditional confines of Davao City to the dynamic, bustling life of Dubai, Paola Gwen Alfaro’s life story is a vivid illustration of Filipino resilience and ambition. Raised in a family with deep roots in government service, Paola grew up with the weight of expectations as the eldest of four siblings.

Her professional journey began in 2010 with a turn of fate at a job fair leading to a position as a Casino Dealer with Star Cruises. This role was a springboard that eventually took her back to the Philippines, where she delved into the Food & Beverage industry, working with brands like Jollibee Foods and Pizza Hut.

“I dedicated almost five solid years to it,” Paola recalls, highlighting the formative nature of this period.

Embracing challenges abroad

The decision to work abroad was driven by a desire for independence and better financial prospects.

“Primarily driven by the pursuit of independence coupled with the allure of substantial earnings,” she explains, detailing her initial foray into the cruise industry and subsequent return to the Philippines.

In 2016, she took a pivotal leap to Dubai, joining the workforce as an assistant restaurant manager before transitioning into her current role as an HR Administrative Officer at MTA Investment LLC.

“I found myself deeply involved in their training… That’s when it hit me: I wanted to pivot towards training and HR,” she shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, revealing the moment her career took a decisive turn.

Paola’s journey wasn’t without its struggles. Adjusting to life in Dubai, particularly the living arrangements, was challenging.

“Dubai life hit me hard, especially with the accommodation scene,” she admits, underscoring the difficulties faced by many expatriates. Despite these challenges, she remained focused on her goals, aspiring to have her own room or flat.

Looking ahead, Paola plans to venture into entrepreneurship.

“Once I wrap up my stint working abroad, my game plan is all about diving into entrepreneurship,” she states, revealing her ambitions for financial stability and entrepreneurial success.

Wisdom for fellow Kabayans

Paola’s advice to fellow Filipinos abroad is grounded in practical wisdom.

“Save up for those stormy days and dive headfirst into investments,” she advises, emphasizing the importance of financial prudence.

In terms of social connections, she suggests, “Be a choosy wizard! Observe, select wisely, and don’t spill all your beans.”

Paola encourages others to embrace risk and adventure.

“Life? It’s all about that dash of risk and adventure! Comfort zones? They’re not the expressway to success,” she passionately declares, urging others to step out of their comfort zones and explore new opportunities.
