Filipina professional in Dubai rises from junior stewardess to executive assistant and head stewardess

In the dynamic cityscape of Dubai, Lauren Loreno’s journey stands out as an exemplar of the resilience and success that characterize the OFWs’ experience. At 41, Lauren, an Executive Assistant at Ogmented FZ-LLC, embodies the ambitious spirit and unwavering determination that many Filipinos bring to their overseas endeavors.

Lauren’s adventure began unexpectedly in 2008 when she arrived in Dubai as a tourist. Within a fortnight, her life took a fortuitous turn.

“I was hired as a junior stewardess in a 92ft M/Y Memories luxury yacht,” Lauren shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

This position wasn’t merely a job; it was an entry point into an elite world. Working alongside French and German colleagues, she honed her skills to the European standards of the boating industry.

Her ascent in her career is marked by her current role: Executive Assistant and Head Stewardess for Mr. Bassem Christo, a prominent director/producer in the Middle East. Lauren manages the interior of his luxurious Lagoon Catamaran Sailing boat, anchored at Palm View West Marina.

Lauren’s decision to leave the Philippines was driven by a quest for better opportunities and a desire to broaden her horizons.

In her words, “The opportunity in the Philippines is so limited.”

Her initial transition to Dubai came with its set of challenges. With her experience as a service crew member at Jollibee Food Corporation and her academic background in tourism, she bravely embarked on this journey, armed with confidence and ambition.

Lauren’s career trajectory is marked by versatility and growth. She expanded her expertise by working in the Food and Beverage department for over four years, progressing from a frontline staff member to a supervisory role. Despite her success in this field, her passion for the yachting world remained unshaken.

Community involvement and personal pursuits

Lauren’s commitment extends beyond her professional duties. She actively participates as a secretary in the International Marine Club in Dubai, focusing on elevating the Filipino presence in the marine industry. Her involvement includes organizing educational activities and training programs.

Additionally, her passion for storytelling and community engagement shines through her vlogging activities, where she interviews people, promotes small businesses, and shares informative content with her followers.

She finds unparalleled joy in her work.

“I don’t feel like working when I’m in the boat,” she shares, highlighting the pleasure she derives from her job, especially during travels across Europe with her employer.

She expresses profound gratitude for the familial treatment she receives from her boss, underscoring a sense of belonging and appreciation in her work environment.

Dubai’s appeal for Lauren lies in its safety and convenience. She praises the country for its organized systems, encompassing everything from transportation to banking. This sense of security and efficiency is a significant factor in her satisfaction with life abroad.

Facing and overcoming adversity

Lauren’s path was not without obstacles. Her initial months in Manila involved financial struggles and housing challenges, staying in less desirable areas to save costs. She faced discrimination in job opportunities, a situation that brought her to tears. Yet, her faith remained her anchor.

“I told myself, don’t give up. God have mercy!” she reminisces, attributing her resilience to her spiritual beliefs.

Looking ahead, Lauren envisions a future filled with family, health, and continued service. She plans to marry her partner, manage their rental business, and dedicate more time to her family and community church. Her advice to fellow OFWs is rich with wisdom: prioritize health, manage finances wisely, choose jobs for passion over salary, and maintain integrity in personal relationships.
