Ocean surfaces outside the polar regions climbed to their hottest August level ever documented last month, part of a broader temperature surge that placed August 2026 alongside July 2023 as the warmest month scientists have measured globally. The finding came from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, which released the data on Thursday.
Across the extra-polar ocean, the average sea surface temperature reached 21.07°C, matching the all-time high set in March 2024. Copernicus linked the ocean warming to the continued burning of fossil fuels alongside a strong El Niño pattern driving up temperatures in the equatorial Pacific.
On land and sea combined, the planet’s average surface air temperature settled at 16.96°C for the month, running 1.65°C hotter than the 1850–1900 baseline used to gauge preindustrial conditions. That reading pushed global temperatures back above the 1.5°C mark for the first time since November 2025 — the ceiling that governments committed to under the Paris Agreement.
Samantha Burgess, who leads climate strategy at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, described the month as an entry that stands out in the long temperature record. “August 2026 was a remarkable month in the global climate record. It was both the warmest August and the warmest month ever recorded,” she said.
The three-month stretch from June through August landed as the joint-warmest such period ever recorded worldwide, level with 2024.
Europe absorbed some of the sharpest effects. Average temperatures over the continent’s land reached 20.26°C in August, roughly 1.1°C above the 1991–2020 norm and enough to rank as the fourth-warmest August the region has seen. The Evening Standard reported that the extreme conditions traced back to May and brought severe drought to the United Kingdom, France, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia, with major rivers including the Rhine, the Danube, the Vistula, the Rhône, and the Po dropping to unusually low levels.
Simon Stiell, executive secretary of UN Climate Change, tied the readings directly to reliance on fossil fuels. “The evidence is irrefutable: this is the spiralling price of humanity’s fossil fuel addiction, and the global climate crisis it is fuelling,” he said.
The Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target refers to a long-term average rather than any single month, meaning one month above the line does not by itself breach the accord — though repeated crossings signal how narrow the remaining margin has become.
