A verbal blowup during a phone call has cost an Arab man his freedom and his residency in the UAE, after the Sharjah Misdemeanor Court handed down a one-month jail term to be followed by deportation.
According to the case, the man tried to explain away his words by telling the court he had been furious and worked up during the exchange, insisting he had not meant what he said. The judges were unconvinced.
The charge stemmed from a complaint filed by another man, who told police that a phone conversation between the two turned hostile and escalated into a shouting match. During that argument, he said, the accused directed insulting remarks at God, repeating them several times and refusing to take them back. To back up his account, the complainant handed investigators an audio recording of the call.
Prosecutors acted on the report and sent the matter to trial. When the accusation was put to him in court, the defendant admitted to it rather than contest the facts.
Weighing the contents of the file alongside the evidence and the defendant’s own account, the court concluded that guilt had been established.
