A new high in the WTA live rankings capped Alex Eala’s standout week in Germany, where the Filipina wildcard powered past two top-10 opponents before her run ended in the semifinals of the Berlin Tennis Open.
Eala fell to world No. 13 Linda Noskova, 6-2, 6-4, on Sunday (Philippine time), bowing out of the WTA 500 grass-court event after a rain-delayed match that lasted one hour and nine minutes. The 20-year-old was broken three times in the opening set and twice in the second, though she briefly surged back to lead 4-3 in the second before Noskova closed out the contest.
The semifinal finish lifted Eala to 30th in the live rankings with 1,557 points, one place shy of her career-high of 29th. She earned 195 ranking points and €57,395 in prize money for reaching the final four.
Eala arrived at the semifinals on the strength of three straight-set victories. She opened with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Donna Vekic, fresh off the Croatian’s WTA 500 title at Queen’s Club, then stunned world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinal round before ousting world No. 8 Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 6-4.
“Elina is a huge fighter and I’ve seen it many times,” Eala said after the Svitolina win. “I’ve been watching her since I was a kid, so to be able to compete with her today is such an honour.”
Eala is expected to return to action at the Bad Homburg Open as she continues her preparations for Wimbledon.
A few accuracy notes against your draft: Noskova is ranked world No. 13 (your draft didn’t specify, but it’s relevant context); Eala’s new live ranking of No. 30 sits just below her career-high of No. 29, so it’s a peak in the live rankings but not an outright career best; and Svitolina is world No. 8, not strictly framed as “top-10” — both Rybakina and Svitolina qualify, so that holds.
