Sen. Risa Hontiveros is laying the groundwork for a possible presidential campaign in 2028, telling an audience in Cebu that she is open to seeking the country’s top post.
The senator made the disclosure on Friday, June 19, during an appearance at Phinma-Southwestern University. She framed her potential candidacy around the prospect of facing Vice President Sara Duterte, who has already signaled she intends to seek the presidency in 2028.
“I’m seriously considering it, preparing for that possibility,” Hontiveros said.
A central theme of her remarks was the need for the opposition to consolidate. She argued that her camp must field someone capable of mounting a credible challenge to Duterte, who continues to enjoy broad popularity.
“I think it is really necessary na magkaroon kami, from our ranks, ng strongest, best, most attractive and hopeful offer sa ating mga kababayan and mga kapwa botante,” she said.
Hontiveros set a timeline for that decision, saying she wants allied groups to rally behind a single contender no later than the first quarter of 2027, though ideally before the close of this year.
“I’m looking forward to that moment na…end of this year or at the very, very latest first quarter next year, magkaisa kami sa aming ranks around whoever will emerge as the strongest contender. Magkaisa kami na there can only be one so that may fighting chance,” she said.
The senator also acknowledged those backing the idea of her candidacy. Support for a Hontiveros run has been building since early this year, when the Risa Na! Movement formally launched. The campaign is being spearheaded by the Akbayan and Magdalo party-list groups.
