Filipino shoppers in Dubai get free cargo vouchers in mall promo

A 12-year-old balikbayan box operator and one of Dubai’s major retail destinations joined forces for the first time this June, building a promotion around the spending habits of Filipinos in the UAE during the country’s 128th Independence Day commemoration.

The initiative, called “Shop and Ship,” handed out AED 100 in balikbayan box vouchers to customers, a perk that drew enthusiasm from those passing through the venue. City Center Deira (DCC) anchored the campaign alongside Pinas Cargo, the courier company behind the voucher offer.

Demand outpaced what organizers had planned for. What began as a two-day run on June 12 and 13 stretched into a third day after the response proved larger than anticipated, giving additional shoppers a window to claim the vouchers.

Among those collecting the rewards were longtime patrons the company refers to as PinasCargonatics, customers who have stuck with the brand throughout its more than a decade in operation. First-timers also lined up to test the courier, drawn in by the word-of-mouth endorsements of regulars.

Organizers framed the venture as a recognition of the size and economic weight of the Filipino market in the Emirates, a community whose purchasing power the mall sought to court directly through the partnership.

Both companies have signaled that the campaign is unlikely to be a one-off, pointing instead to the possibility of further joint efforts as the Filipino consumer base in the UAE continues to expand.
