As the Philippines celebrates Independence Day, First Light continues its international journey as a testament to the growing presence of Filipino stories on the global stage.
Following its New South Wales premiere at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Sydney Film Festival, the Australian-Filipino co-production will make its Asian premiere on June 13 at the Shanghai International Film Festival before returning home for its Philippine theatrical release on June 24.
Directed by James J. Robinson and produced by Gabrielle Pearson of Majella Productions alongside Christelle Lou Dychangco and Jane Pe Aguirre of Clou Media Productions, First Light is the first Australian-Filipino feature film to receive government financing from both countries.
Rooted in themes of land, identity, resilience, and belonging, the film reflects a growing movement toward decolonized storytelling, stories shaped by local voices, perspectives, and lived experiences.
The film stars Ruby Ruiz alongside Maricel Soriano, Rez Cortez, Soliman Cruz, and Kidlat Tahimik. Supported by Screen Australia, the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the Melbourne International Film Festival Premiere Fund, and VicScreen, First Light demonstrates the power of international collaboration while remaining firmly grounded in Filipino storytelling.
Its screening at the Sydney Opera House marked a significant milestone for the production, while its upcoming Asian premiere in Shanghai will introduce the film to one of the region’s largest and most influential film audiences.
Following its international festival run, First Light returns home for its Philippine theatrical release on June 24, bringing a story of resilience, connection, and hope back to the audiences that inspired it. As Filipinos commemorate Independence Day, the film serves as a reminder that telling our own stories—and sharing them with the world—remains one of the most meaningful expressions of cultural identity and creative sovereignty.
