Several Indian expatriate workers were among the seven people who died when a minibus slammed into a stalled truck on Emirates Road on Monday, the Indian Consulate in Dubai has confirmed.
The mission said its officials reached the hospital to see the injured Indian nationals and were coordinating with Emirati authorities to provide whatever support was needed. In a post on X, the consulate said it was deeply pained by a tragedy that claimed the lives of several Indian workers, and extended its sympathies to the bereaved. “Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with the grieving families during this difficult time,” it said.
Alongside the seven deaths, nine people were hurt in the collision. Dubai Police said five of the injured were in serious condition and four sustained moderate injuries, with all of them taken to hospital for treatment.
The police account traces the crash to a mechanical failure. Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said early findings showed the truck had come to a sudden stop in a lane after breaking down, and that the minibus then hit it from behind. “The bus driver, who allegedly failed to pay attention and keep a safe distance, then rammed into the truck from behind,” he said in a statement reported by PTI.
To establish the exact circumstances of the impact, specialists from the Traffic Accident Investigation Section were dispatched to the site to inspect it and collect evidence.
Brigadier bin Suwaidan also used the case to set out what drivers should do when a vehicle stalls and cannot be cleared from the road. He cited switching on hazard lights, placing a warning triangle a safe distance behind the vehicle, moving passengers to safety, stepping away from the car, and calling police at once as the actions to take without delay.
