New SSS pensioners will have to wait until September for higher pension

Filipinos who qualify as retirement, disability, or survivor pensioners between June 1 and August 31, 2026 will receive their increased monthly benefits beginning September 1, the Social Security System (SSS) said.

The clarification sets apart this group from members already on the rolls as of May 31, who began collecting the higher amounts when the pension fund advanced its 2026 increase to June 1. Eligibility for the earlier payout hinges on when a member officially becomes a pensioner, not on when the pension is released.

“Those whose contingencies fall between June 1 and August 31, 2026, will receive their increased pension starting September 1, 2026,” the agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

The adjustment is the second tranche of the SSS Pension Reform Program (PRP), a three-year scheme spanning 2025 to 2027 that lifts monthly pensions each year. Retirement and disability pensioners are due a 10-percent increase, while death and survivor pensioners get 5 percent.

These increases are typically implemented every September, but SSS pulled this year’s forward to June 1 to “provide earlier financial relief to pensioners” amid rising prices.

SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Joseph de Claro pointed to inflation and higher energy costs behind the earlier rollout. “With the early implementation, we hope to provide timely relief to our pensioners and their families as they continue to face everyday financial challenges,” he said.

Finance Secretary Frederick Go, who chairs the Social Security Commission, said advancing the schedule lets pensioners “[meet] their daily needs and enjoy greater financial security sooner.”

About 4.1 million pensioners nationwide are expected to benefit, with roughly P6 billion in additional benefits earmarked for release from June to August.
