Dubai sets up 40 air-conditioned rest spots to keep delivery riders cool this summer

Around 40 air-conditioned shelters built for delivery riders are now ready for use across Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said, with maintenance and setup work wrapped up before temperatures climb through the summer months.

The facilities are spread across high-activity parts of the city, among them Hessa Street, Al Khawaneej, Al Barsha, Al Satwa, Oud Maitha, Al Karama, and Arjan. RTA said it picked the locations after studying operational figures and identifying where delivery demand runs highest, working alongside delivery firms to map out the busiest zones.

Inside, each shelter holds roughly 10 riders at once and comes fitted with water dispensers and charging points for mobile phones. Parking bays for delivery motorcycles sit alongside the units, and individual sites carry extra features matched to what riders need day to day.

Ahmed Mahboob, CEO of the Licencing Agency at RTA, said the exterior of every shelter was designed to cut down the impact of direct sunlight indoors and hold in cool air through proper thermal insulation, while still keeping the structures visible from the road.

The agency framed the rollout as part of a wider push to cut accident risks, lift riders’ working conditions, and strengthen adherence to traffic rules. RTA pointed to the rapid expansion of the delivery business in recent years, fuelled by growing consumer appetite for such services, as a key reason for investing in spaces where riders can rest and work more safely.

“Traffic safety remains RTA’s highest priority, in line with our ambition to make Dubai a world leader in this field. We have developed an integrated governance framework for the delivery sector that ensures effective oversight across Dubai and contributes to continuously raising service standards,” Mahboob said.
